The film "East is Red" made necessary cuts to the 1964 stage performance version. Out of the original 8 scenes of the stage play, only the prologue "East is Red" and the first six scenes, "Dawn of the East," "The Flame of Revolution," "Across Mountains and Rivers," "The Beacon of Resistance," "Burial of the Jiang Family Dynasty," and "The Chinese People Stand Up," were selected, while the last two scenes, "The Motherland is Advancing" and "The World is Advancing," were intentionally excluded from the film following Mao Zedong's advice. During the filming, most scenes were shot using multiple cameras, and many group appearances and crowd scenes on stage were captured using wide-angle shots that integrated panoramic views of the stage and the audience. This showcased the grandeur of the stage performance and effectively artistically realized Zhou Enlai's repeated emphasis on "not leaving the stage," making the entire film fluid and immersive rather than mechanically fixed from one camera angle. Thus, the completed stage art documentary not only remained closely connected to the stage but also boldly innovated, perfectly merging stage performance and artistic documentation, paving a new path for future similar style film productions.
