This film won the Golden Lion at the 69th Venice Film Festival, and is the 18th film by Kim Ki-duk. Li Jiangdao (played by Lee Jeong-jin) is a ruthless loan shark who has no family or partner; his life revolves around collecting debts from borrowers every day. Cold-hearted by nature, he employs brutal methods, often threatening others with violence, and even crippling those who owe him money. Families that have been pursued by Jiangdao for debts have been left to live broken lives devoid of dignity. However, one day, a middle-aged woman named Jiang Meishan (played by Zhao Minxiu) appears before Jiangdao, claiming to be his biological mother, stating that he is her long-lost son. Driven by a longing for family, Jiangdao, though skeptical, begins a unique "mother-son relationship" with her. As he gradually experiences the warmth of familial affection, Jiangdao remains unaware that a conspiracy awaits him...
