Aristarain's iconic film of the 1990s. "Somewhere in the World" is undoubtedly a legendary Argentine film, not only for its high quality and artistic merit but also for its unique and legendary background. In 1992, the Argentine Film Association initially selected this film to compete for that year's Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, but later changed their decision at the last minute due to the film's sensitive subject matter, replacing it with another work. In a fit of anger, the director decided to submit it as Uruguay's official entry, as his wife's nationality is Uruguayan and she contributed to the screenplay. Later, this film, which was entirely made by Argentine nationals in terms of the director, actors, and main creative personnel, was indeed nominated as Uruguay's representative, while the absurd replacement Argentine entry did not qualify. This left the Oscar Foreign Language Film Committee in a dilemma; the film was indeed excellent, but awarding it would violate the rule that a film can only represent the country of the majority of its creative crew's nationality, effectively condoning such incidents. Thus, the committee ultimately awarded another film for various reasons, even though in reality, this film was the best among them. In a fit of anger, the director decided never to release this film in the United States, and as a result, the Oscar organizing committee revised the rules to make the submission process for foreign films more transparent and stringent. This film thus became the only one in Oscar history to officially represent two different countries in the competition for Best Foreign Language Film.
