The story takes place in a small town in England, where Constance (played by Lana Turner) returns to her hometown after experiencing the tumult of war, ready to heal her weary soul. Although the town appears peaceful and idyllic on the surface, the internal power dynamics have long been rotten. Beneath the bright sunlight, ugly and dirty dealings occur continuously, with power, morality, and law effectively monopolized by the wealthy, who do not allow anyone to infringe upon their selfish property. A murder draws Allison (played by Diane Varsi), Selena (played by Hope Lange), and others into the center of this whirlpool of power.
