Laura (played by Julia Roberts) never anticipated that her marriage could cause her so much pain. In just three years, her husband Martin (played by Patrick Bergin) had demonstrated control and possessiveness far beyond normal bounds, and his rage and violence forced Laura to submit to his surveillance and control. During a sailing trip, Laura intentionally acted as if she were afraid of water, preparing for her escape by jumping into the sea. Martin believed that the non-swimmer Laura had drowned, but in reality, she escaped and settled in a small town, where she met a trustworthy man named Ben (played by Kevin Anderson). Just as Laura's life began to fall into place, Martin accidentally discovered that Laura was still alive, and in a fit of rage, he set off on a quest to find his wife.
