Based on the early personal experiences of director Franco Zeffirelli, it tells the story of a group of women who love Italian culture and art during World War II, featuring the former British ambassador's wife (played by Maggie Smith) who has tea with Mussolini, Mary (played by Joan Plowright) who takes care of her employer's illegitimate son Luca, art enthusiast Arabella (played by Judi Dench), young British journalist Connie (played by Tessa Pritchard), resourceful American woman Georgie (played by Lily Tomlin), and free-spirited but kind-hearted American Elsa (played by Cher). Before the outbreak of the war, they often gathered at the former ambassador's home or had tea and chats at the Uffizi Gallery. After the war started, they were all placed under house arrest in the ancient town of San Gimignano, while Luca, whom they had cared for, had grown up and often came to help them.
