In the late 1960s, leftist riots swept through Hong Kong, creating a turbulent situation. Xiaoyu (played by Maggie Cheung) arrives in the metropolis from the countryside as a struggling actress who is willing to do anything for money and to rise in her career. With the help of a director, Xiaoyu moves into a new apartment and accidentally meets Ah Gong (played by Alan Tam), who lives on the rooftop. Down and out, Ah Gong works as an unlicensed taxi driver during the day and becomes a wealthy lady's sexual partner at night. The two marginalized individuals, starting with contempt and hatred, eventually come together. They work hard to make money and manage their lives, but the chaotic situation continually shatters their small happiness... The film won three awards at the 1990 Hong Kong Film Awards: Best Actress (Maggie Cheung), Best Art Direction, and Best Screenplay.
