In the Tang Dynasty, Yu Xiu (played by Niu Ben), a secret-color porcelain artisan from Meicen Mountain, crafts a protective Guanyin statue for the frail Prince Li Yi (played by Nie Yuan) to be enshrined at Wutai Mountain. When the statue is completed, he finds an abandoned baby girl and adopts her, naming her Lian Mei (played by Li Chun). People say the baby arrived alongside the Guanyin statue as a sign of destiny, a manifestation of Guanyin on Earth. Twenty years later, Lian Mei grows into a beautiful young woman, known for her kindness and compassion, as her adoptive father tells her that all passersby might be her biological parents. People also say that Lian Mei's virtuous character is filled with compassion, much like the Bodhisattva Guanyin. The Japanese envoy to the Tang Dynasty, Hui E (played by Nakatsukasa Hideo), arrives in Tang and, with Lian Mei’s help, seeks the secret-color porcelain Guanyin statue in the rain and eventually gets his wish. As Hui E boards a ship to return to Japan, a sudden storm arises while passing Meicen Mountain, causing him and the Guanyin statue to fall into the sea. Lian Mei, who comes to see him off, jumps into the sea to rescue him but disappears in the storm. Heartbroken, Hui E sees lotus flowers floating towards the ship, surrounding it and forming a sea of lotus. He then sees Lian Mei rising among the flowers, transforming into a Guanyin in white robes holding a lotus! Hui E realizes this truth and decides to enshrine the secret-color porcelain Guanyin statue at Meicen Mountain. From then on, Putuo Mountain was founded and gradually became a world-renowned Guanyin place of worship.
