During the Anti-Japanese War, nightclub clown Dong Guomin (played by Zhong Zhentao) could not bear the indiscriminate bombing of Shanghai by the Japanese invaders. He resolutely bids farewell to his uncle to join the army. Before leaving, Dong Guomin falls in love at first sight with a woman under the Suzhou Bridge, and they promise to meet again after victory... Ten years pass in the blink of an eye, and Dong Guomin returns to Shanghai, often wandering under the Suzhou Bridge, yearning to meet the person from that time. However, things have changed; now, only a few down-and-out veterans sleep under the bridge. Miss A Shu (played by Zhang Aijia), who lives below Dong Guomin, takes in a woman named Deng Zai (played by Ye Qianwen) who comes to Shanghai and helps her with life. The two refer to each other as sisters. Dong Guomin encounters Deng Zai on the rooftop. Although Deng Zai is not the person Dong Guomin mistakenly thought she was, she still develops feelings for the young man. Soon, A Shu also gets involved in this relationship, but to support Deng Zai, A Shu chooses to step back. Not long after, Dong Guomin finally discovers that A Shu is the person from under the bridge, but at this moment, A Shu has already boarded a train heading south with someone else... This film is the debut work of Tsui Hark's film studio.
