In a coastal town in the Tohoku region of Japan, the wealthy Saigo family visits the fisherman’s family, the Hamaguchi, regarding the marriage of their daughter, Chikako (played by Akari Kuroki). Despite the significant difference in social status, witnessing the love between the young couple leads both families to agree to the marriage. However, just five days later, the world is shocked by the Great East Japan Earthquake on 3/11. The Saigo family is spared, but three members of the Hamaguchi family perish, including Chikako’s fiancé, the eldest son Shuichi (played by Daisuke Watanabe). Afterward, Chikako’s father brings Shuichi's grandfather (played by Koji Hashizume), father Katsuaki (played by Toshio Yanagiba), and younger brother Mitsuhiko (played by Ryunosuke Kamiki) to his home, but unable to let Chikako bear too much sorrow, the three generations choose to leave.
