Stephen Hawking (played by Eddie Redmayne) and Jane (played by Felicity Jones) meet at a dance, where they hit it off during their first conversation, feeling a sense of missed connection. Soon after, Hawking boldly invites Jane to another dance, and they fall deeply in love. Unfortunately, after a fainting episode, Hawking is diagnosed with a rare disease known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), with doctors stating he only has two years to live. Struggling with the illness, Hawking falls into depression, but Jane does not abandon him; on the contrary, despite various challenges, they eventually marry, and Jane gives birth to a lively and lovely child. As Hawking's physical condition weakens quickly, he continues to achieve one academic success after another. To care for Hawking, Jane willingly becomes the "woman behind him," but this also becomes the first crack in their happy marriage.
