18-year-old Maria (played by Catalina Sandino Moreno) quits her job at a flower plantation, discovers she is pregnant, and breaks up with her boyfriend due to disagreements. Maria and her friend Blanca get a new job—smuggling drugs to the United States. Despite the risks, Maria decides to take the job for the hefty payment, leading her to meet seasoned smuggler Lucy and practice swallowing the drugs. When they are check at the airport, Maria escapes thanks to her pregnancy. After being picked up, the three successfully deliver the drugs, but that night, Maria learns that Lucy was killed by drug dealers when the pills she swallowed burst in her stomach. Immediately, Maria and Blanca decide to take the drugs. To help Lucy, Maria finds her sister Carla based on the information left by Lucy.
