France in 1958. 21-year-old Ruth Ponsfleur (played by Déborah François) runs a grocery store in Lower Normandy with her father. Despite her young age, she develops a strong interest in the typewriter in the store and often practices typing secretly during the quiet of the night. Her father arranges a marriage for Ruth with a local boy who repairs cars, but ambitious Ruth is not willing to settle for being a country housewife. With dreams of city life, Ruth goes to an insurance company to apply for a secretary position with Louis (played by Romain Duris). During the interview, although Louis is skeptical of Ruth's work abilities, her rapid typing skills leave him shocked, and he decides to hire her as his new secretary. However, Louis has his own motives. Constantly ridiculed by his father, Louis decides to become Ruth's typing coach, hoping to prove his worth by helping her become a world champion. To avoid returning to the countryside, Ruth accepts Louis's challenge. Louis transforms into a strict coach and shows no mercy towards Ruth; her typing skills improve significantly. With victory in sight, both begin to feel a subtle change between them.
