It turns out that Naokuni's brother, Satoshi (played by Tetsuji Tamayama), killed someone during a burglary gone wrong in order to help Naokuni go to university, and as a result, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. The only solace Satoshi has in prison is his brother's letters. Naokuni, full of humiliation, becomes insecure and withdrawn, even giving up his dream of becoming a comedian. Because of his brother's past, people look at him with prejudice, and he has to frequently change jobs. However, Yumiko never gives up on her pursuit of Naokuni, and eventually, Naokuni is touched and marries Yumiko. But even living modestly, their family still faces exclusion, and their child is not spared either. Naokuni decides to completely sever ties with his brother's correspondence, but can family bonds be easily cut?
