Zhang Ming and Fatty are two idle young men in Beijing who make a living by pretending to be police officers and extorting wealthy businessmen. In addition, they often chat up young women on the streets seeking thrills. One day, Zhang Ming meets Wu Di, a female student from the foreign language department of a certain university. These two young people from vastly different backgrounds spark an unexpected connection. Zhang Ming's cynicism quickly captivates the romantic Wu Di, who becomes loyal to him; however, Zhang Ming is just playing around and does not cherish the feelings of this pure girl. Feeling hurt, Wu Di sells her body and willingly falls into decadence, ultimately paying with her life. Zhang Ming, on the other hand, is imprisoned during a capture operation. Three years later, he is released from prison. On his way to a seaside city for recovery, he encounters the cheerful female university student Hu Yan. This girl gives Zhang Ming a sense of familiarity, while also making him acutely aware of the irreparable damage he caused to Wu Di in the past… This film is adapted from Wang Shuo's novel of the same name, "Half is Flame, Half is Seawater."
