In 1867, Li Hongzhang (played by Sun Haiying) submitted a memorial, and the Qing government ordered the establishment of the Naval Academy, where foreigners would teach Western naval knowledge. Deng Shichang (played by Lu Yi) came to take the exam, with the help of the Liu Banchan siblings, and made a remarkable impression. In 1877, Deng Shichang sent his classmates to study at the Royal Naval College in Britain. Four years later, he represented the court to welcome them back triumphantly. He had a chance encounter on the streets of London with Liu Banchan's sister (played by Gong Jie), where he reprimanded some provocation from foreigners.
