Jerry Mulligan (Gene Kelly) is a struggling American painter living in Paris. Through his friend, pianist Adam (Oscar Levant), Jerry meets a famous French singer, Henri (George Guétary). Soon, Jerry is recognized and financially supported by a wealthy woman, Milo (Nina Foch), but he falls in love with a young salesgirl from a department store, Lise (Leslie Caron). Unexpectedly, Lise turns out to be Henri's girlfriend, and an unaware Henri encourages Jerry to fight for love. All the conflict escalates during a grand black-and-white ball, and after learning that Lise is about to marry Henri, Jerry fantasizes one last time about a romantic dance in Paris. Will true love slip away forever? The film won six Academy Awards in 1951, including Best Picture, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Musical Score, and Best Screenplay.
