During the American Civil War, the Cameron family, Southern plantation owners, originally lived a comfortable life. Cameron and Stoneman's children attended the same boarding school, where young Benjamin Cameron (played by Henry B. Walthall) and Elsie Stoneman (played by Lillian Gish) developed feelings for each other. However, the Civil War soon broke out. Benjamin joined the Confederate Army and went to the frontlines, becoming enemies with his former friend Stoneman (played by Ralph Lewis). After the war, African Americans engaged in looting and violence. Benjamin organized the Ku Klux Klan to take revenge on African Americans, thwarting the conspiracy to establish a so-called "African American kingdom." Finally, Benjamin and Elsie, the star-crossed lovers, came together. Their union symbolized the birth and unification of a new nation. This three-hour epic, directed by American filmmaking giant D.W. Griffith, is one of the most significant milestone films in the history of world cinema and a classic of the silent film era. The film is controversial due to its advocacy of white supremacy and its glorification of the Ku Klux Klan.
