Charlie (Jim Carrey) is a kind-hearted patrolman whose wife elopes with another man after giving birth to three sons from the affair. Nevertheless, Charlie treats his three sons as his own, and they respect him greatly. The townspeople take advantage of Charlie's goodness, and eventually, another tough character hidden within Charlie—A-Qing—emerges. A-Qing is completely different from Charlie; he causes chaos and stirs up trouble everywhere.
The police examine Charlie and discover he suffers from schizophrenia, requiring medication. At this time, Charlie is tasked with escorting the beautiful Elaine (Renée Zellweger) back to New York, but her former boss, Dick, whose illegal activities have been reported, believes Elaine is the informant. As a result, Dick bribes the police and others, vowing to kill Elaine.
Elaine seeks assistance from Charlie, and together with A-Qing, they embark on a desperate journey. Charlie ends up leaving his medication at the hotel, leading to unpredictable switches between Charlie and A-Qing. Complicating matters further, both Charlie and A-Qing fall in love with Elaine, resulting in jealousy and constant conflict between them. Meanwhile, the police and Dick relentlessly pursue Charlie and the others...
