Li Tian'en (played by Louis Koo) loved to fight when he was a teenager, and later became a gang leader. He and his mother, Ma En (played by Miao Kexiu), constantly bicker, which is their usual way of interacting.   Chen Meibao (played by Rene Liu) falls in love with Li Tian'en at first sight in the police station. Despite their vastly different backgrounds, they still love each other. However, when Meibao tells Tian'en that she is pregnant, it hits him like a bolt from the blue; having grown up without a father, he has no idea how to be one. Nevertheless, the responsibilities he must bear cannot be avoided. Just when Tian'en thinks his life is going to be trapped by his wife and child, the birth of his daughter, Xi'er, changes him completely.   Tian'en tries every possible way to hide his gang identity from his daughter and abandons his illegal business. For her sake, he humbles himself to please her. During this time, Tian'en's mother passes away, and due to the economic downturn, his business suffers immensely. As the pressure from the gang's elders intensifies, Tian'en reluctantly accepts his fate.   Xi'er continues to grow each day, and she learns about her father's gangster identity. Meibao hopes Tian'en can exit the underworld for good, but the gang wants to recommend him as the head leader at this juncture and uses his debts as leverage, leaving Tian'en in a dilemma.   To make amends with the gang and ensure a way out, he decides to trade with drug dealers, but the police ambushes him.
