Substitute teacher Song Wenhua (played by Sun Haiying) works at a remote school that once had hundreds of students and teachers. However, as more people from the countryside went to work in cities, the school became deserted, and Song Wenhua was left as the only teacher still dedicated to his position. As the new semester approached, he went door-to-door to gather students, but only four showed up, from three different grades. Song Wenhua had to teach them in one classroom in turns. Later, more students transferred out, leaving only Tang Mingming. Despite this, Song Wenhua continued to go to school every day, ringing the bell on time and raising the national flag, upholding the dignity of the school. The education committee held an exam for substitute teachers to become permanent. Song Wenhua failed the exam and was dismissed by the education department, which sent a recent graduate to replace him. However, the college student quit after two weeks. In the face of having no teacher for Tang Mingming (played by Wang Naixun), his grandmother, village officials, and education bureau leaders all came to persuade Song Wenhua to return. Angered, Song Wenhua planned to go work in Guangdong, but after a moral struggle, he returned from the train station and resumed teaching Tang Mingming. Tang Mingming's grandmother, to show appreciation for Song, brought meals for him and Tang Mingming every day. One rainy day, she fell into the river and was injured, leaving her bedridden. Tang Mingming was unable to attend school due to caring for his grandmother. Song Wenhua resolutely carried a blackboard to Tang Mingming's home to teach. Tragically, his grandmother passed away shortly after. Song Wenhua persisted in teaching Tang Mingming until he graduated from elementary school and entrusted him to the principal of a middle school, thus ending his 30-year teaching career. Song Wenhua then went to work in the city but consistently sent 500 yuan each month for Tang Mingming's living expenses. The feelings of gratitude in their correspondence were beyond words.
