During the Anti-Japanese War, the North China region was engulfed in flames of war, and the Eighth Route Army, under the leadership of the Communist Party, struggled to fend off the enemy's relentless pursuit. Instructor Wang Jin (played by Tao Zeru) was originally engaged in behind-enemy lines work but was framed by a traitor and came under suspicion from the organization. He was imprisoned alongside three bandits, three deserters, a spy (played by Xie Yuan), and a poisoner. Wang Jin sought help from the anti-espionage chief Xu Zhi (played by Chen Daoming) to re-investigate his case, but communication with various units was lost, and Japanese troops were in pursuit. Xu Zhi could not prove Wang Jin's innocence. In interactions with the other eight prisoners, he impressed the bandit leader Big Baldy (played by Zhao Xiaorui) and the older brother among the deserters, Old Wantuo (played by Wei Zongwan), with his upright and loyal character.
