Engineer Tom (Jim Broadbent) and psychotherapist Gerri (Ruth Sheen) are a middle-aged couple living in London. Single woman Mary (Lesley Manville) is Gerri's colleague. Spring arrives, and Gerri invites Mary over for dinner. Mary tells them she is saving money to buy a car. That night, Mary gets drunk and stays the night at Gerri's house, where she meets Tom and Gerri's son Joe (Oliver Maltman) in the morning. In the summer, Mary finally buys a used car. She attends a friends' gathering at Gerri's house, where she encounters Tom's old friend Ken (Peter Wight). However, lonely Mary feels panic at Ken's romantic advances. In autumn, Joe brings his girlfriend Katie (Karina Fernandez) home, and coincidentally, Mary is there too. Seeing Joe with his girlfriend leaves Mary feeling uneasy. In winter, Tom's brother Ronnie (David Bradley) loses his wife. After attending the funeral, Tom invites him to stay in London for a few days.
