In the vast West, a passerby named Shane (played by Alan Ladd) passing through a farm raises the suspicion of the owner, the Starrett family. It turns out that local thugs led by a man named Riker are constantly harassing residents like the Starretts in order to seize their land. The male head of the family, Joe Starrett, learns about Shane's identity and introduces his beautiful wife Maria and son Joey to him, inviting Shane to stay and help on the farm. Shortly after Shane arrives in town, he faces humiliation at the local tavern from Riker and his gang. The farmers, unwilling to give up their hard-earned homes, gather to devise a plan against Riker, but end up watching Shane fight Riker's men. Shane works hard on the farm and occasionally teaches Joey combat skills. Meanwhile, Riker continues his plan to drive out the Starretts. Shane decides to fight back...
