In 1966, Chow Mo-wan (played by Tony Leung) returns to Hong Kong from Singapore, wanting to forget his past. He checks into Room 2047 of the Oriental Hotel, which is just one number away from the familiar 2046, and begins his career as a writer. The women (played by Zhang Ziyi, Faye Wong, Maggie Cheung, Carina Lau, among others) who once appeared in his life haunt his mind, causing him to question the nature of time and space. He cannot forget his past; instead, the memories come back to him more vividly. To make a better farewell to the past, he transforms the bits and pieces of his life into words, writing the novel "2046" (which claims that if one boards the train to 2046, they can recover lost memories).
