It is no coincidence that the father-daughter duo, who depend on each other, the wine-loving father, and the striking props all converge on Ozu. Claire Denis (from "Beau Travail") pays homage to Ozu; if not stated, one might only recognize the poetic signature style of cinematography and not realize how close the two can be. The melancholic blue night, the labyrinthine road network, the subway tracks interwoven between buildings, and the superb staging first depict the lonely personality of the city, then the characters are placed within it, allowing the drama to unfold naturally without much dialogue. The father, worried about his daughter, and the daughter, reluctant to love, create a world filled with a strong sense of kinship, unfolding a continuous story. Ozu would agree: sometimes in life, one must learn to let go.
