This film is based on a true story. In 1957, the successful launch of a Soviet satellite sparked a sense of crisis among the American public. Homer (played by Jake Gyllenhaal), an ordinary high school student from a mining town, is worried about his future; he didn't make the team, and his physically strong brother is favored by their father John (played by Chris Cooper). Unwilling to settle for mediocrity, Homer begins to dream of building rockets. With the support of his teachers and friends, Homer dedicates himself to research, and his teacher brings him the opportunity to enter college through rocket building. Meanwhile, John, who is in charge of the mine, hopes his son will take over and hinders his research. At the same time, the police halt Homer's activities due to a forest fire incident. Will this young man achieve the success he desires?
