In the 1970s, a killer who called himself the "Zodiac" emerged in San Francisco. After committing murders, he would send letters to the media containing ciphers and clues, taunting the police. Various misunderstandings caused the case to reach a standstill, leaving the police increasingly helpless. The serial killings also caught the attention of San Francisco Chronicle reporters Robert (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) and Paul (played by Robert Downey Jr.), who, with the help of Officer David (played by Mark Ruffalo), began to investigate the series of murders.
