This is a special performance celebrating the successful 25th anniversary of the musical "The Phantom of the Opera," held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, UK. The event consisted of three grand performances on the evening of October 1, 2011, and the following afternoon and evening, providing a stunning audiovisual feast for musical theater fans in attendance. Meanwhile, the live recordings were also shown on big screens in the UK and the US. The cast featured Iranian-Canadian musical theater actor Ramin Karimloo as the leading male role, the Phantom, and American musical theater actress Sierra Boggess as the leading female role, Christine Daaé. The two had previously collaborated in Weber's 2010 sequel to "The Phantom of the Opera," "Love Never Dies," where they were the lead characters in the London premiere. Prior to this, Ramin Karimloo played the Phantom in the London cast from 2007 to 2009, and Sierra Boggess was Christine in the Las Vegas premiere of "The Phantom." Although both actors were already very familiar with their roles and had worked together before, they had not performed this classic work by Weber together prior to these three concerts. At the end of the performance, original artists of "The Phantom" from different times and places came on stage together to celebrate the stage classic they had contributed to. The musical "The Phantom of the Opera," composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is adapted from the novel of the same name by French novelist Gaston Leroux, and is considered a monumental work in musical theater. Since its West End premiere in London in 1986, it has remained popular and is now the second-longest-running musical in the West End (only behind "Les Misérables"). On Broadway in New York, the production has been running since 1988 and broke the consecutive performance record set by "Cats" in 2006, becoming the longest-running musical in Broadway history. In 2004, a film version directed by Joel Schumacher was released. Worldwide, the musical has won nearly 60 major theatrical awards. As of 2011, it has been performed in 27 countries and 145 cities, with recordings released in different languages and productions. The musical first met the audience in mainland China in 2004, when the Asian touring production performed nearly a hundred times at the Shanghai Grand Theater, creating a sensation in the cultural scene of the city and becoming one of Shanghai's annual cultural events. The musical returned for a second tour in Shanghai between 2013 and 2014. Over 25 years, "The Phantom of the Opera" has grossed over 3.2 billion in ticket sales, surpassing any film production. The English version of the musical currently performs regularly at local theaters in London and New York. Regarding the creative team for this production, the iconic theater producer Cameron Mackintosh has been the producer from the early creation and performance to the ongoing operation of the musical. The lyrics are by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe, and the overall director of the stage version is the renowned theater director Harold Prince.
