Bobby (played by Jack Nicholson) was born into a musical family, but for some reason, he abandoned music and works in oil drilling to make a living. His girlfriend Ray, who works as a waitress, often annoys Bobby, but he cannot bring himself to part with her. Bobby's behavior is quite promiscuous; he seizes various opportunities to have flings with unfamiliar women, acts out in frustration on congested roads, and loses his temper with his only friend Elton after hearing the news of his girlfriend's pregnancy. Elton is arrested for robbery, and the despondent Bobby visits his sister, who is recording a piano piece, only to hear the news that their father is gravely ill. Bobby and Ray drive to Washington to visit their father, picking up two strange hitchhikers along the way: a cynical, antisocial woman and her lesbian friend. After a bumpy ride, Bobby visits his father alone, only to find that the latter has had a stroke and no longer recognizes him...
