In the late Sengoku period of Japan, there was an eccentric named Ikebana Senko. He loved flowers as if they were his life; he was the flower monk of the Rokkaku-do at the Daikaku-ji in Kyoto and a master of Ikebana renowned far and wide. The pine trees he manipulated successfully captivated Oda Nobunaga, the lord of Gifu Castle, and both Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Sen no Rikyū were enamored with his Ikebana skills. He was not good with words and often forgot names, yet he maintained close ties with famous figures like Hideyoshi and Rikyū, without any desire to curry favor or climb the social ladder. The art of creating flowers was his sole joy and pursuit. As time passed, Hideyoshi, who had tragically lost his beloved son, Tsuru-matsu, became mercilessly brutal; he not only purged political dissenters but also brutally punished innocent commoners who expressed grievances in private. In the end, not only common people but even his friend Rikyū were driven to the brink.
