In the Ozark region of northwest Missouri, 17-year-old Ree (Jennifer Lawrence) is left to care for her sick mother, her 12-year-old younger brother, and her 6-year-old sister. Ree's father has repeatedly become a target for police due to his involvement in meth production, and this time is no exception, having been on the run for months. With the court date approaching, Ree learns that if her father does not appear, the old house where the family lives will be repossessed by the court. Determined to find her father, Ree ventures out, even if it means reaching out to her dangerous distant relatives who live off drugs. She first seeks help from her uncle, "Teardrop" (John Hawkes), but is thrown out; she then approaches distant relative Merab (Dale Dickey), only to be coldly expelled. With the court date looming, Ree, disregarding everyone's warnings, steps closer to the truth in this impoverished and perilous farming community... The film won the C.I.C.A.E. award and the Youth Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival, as well as the Grand Jury Prize and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival.
