"Passing" is adapted from Nella Larsen's famous 1929 novel of the same name, revolving around two Black women, Irene Redfield (played by Tessa Thompson) and Clare Kendry (portrayed by Oscar-nominated Ruth Negga). Set during the height of the Harlem Renaissance in the late 1920s, both women are able to pass as white, yet choose to live in two worlds divided by skin color. On a summer afternoon, two childhood friends unexpectedly reunite, and Irene reluctantly allows Clare to visit. Clare charms Irene's husband (André Holland) and family, eventually penetrating her extensive social circle. As their lives become more entwined, Irene finds her once-stable existence upended by Clare's presence. "Passing" is a captivating film that examines the obsessions and suppressions of human nature. What lies can people tell themselves and others to protect the reality they have carefully constructed?
