In the first year of King Cheonjong, Ding Ruoquan (played by Xue Jinqiu) was exiled to the distant Black Mountain Island due to the impact of the Shin-yo persecution incident. After arriving on the island, Ding became deeply interested in the marine life there and decided to write a book about it. He sought help from Chang Da (played by Bian Yaohan), a young fisherman who was born and raised there and was familiar with various marine creatures, but at first, Chang refused because Ding Ruoquan was a convict. Later, Ding learned that Chang often faced difficulties while teaching himself to read, so he proposed that they teach each other their respective skills.
