Charlotte (played by Charlize Theron) is the U.S. Secretary of State. By chance, she learns that the current president (Bob Odenkirk) does not plan to run for re-election. Having always believed in her exceptional abilities, Charlotte finally gets the opportunity to run for president. With her goal set, a team quickly forms around Charlotte, and they recruit speechwriter Fred (played by Seth Rogen) to write her campaign speeches. In fact, Charlotte and Fred are old acquaintances; when Charlotte was young, she worked as a nanny in Fred's house. Upon meeting again after many years, their carefree childhood memories resurface, and Fred finds his feelings for Charlotte reignited. However, in a world where everything has changed, will this relationship have a chance?
