At the end of Japan's Warring States period, the regent Toyotomi Hideyoshi (played by Masakuni Ichimura) is about to achieve a monumental reign, while the downfall of the Hojo clan is imminent. Hideyoshi orders his subordinates Ishida Mitsunari (played by Yusuke Umeki) and Otani Yoshitsugu (played by Takayuki Yamada) to lead an army of 20,000 to advance towards the diminutive castle of Shinobi, located within the Hojo territory. The castle's lord, Narita Ujitsuna (played by Masahiko Nishimura), knowing he cannot resist, has already submitted a letter of surrender to the regent and subsequently fled to his main castle in Odawara. After this, Ujitsuna's cousin Nagahira (played by Mansai Nomura), known to the citizens as "Puppet Adou," takes over as the acting lord of the castle. The mischievous Nagahira is dissatisfied with the arrogant words and actions of the envoy Nagatsuka Masaka (played by Hiroshi Hirabayashi) and immediately declares war. With the support of warriors like Masaki Tanba (played by Koichi Sato), Shibasaki Izumino (played by Tomochika Yamaguchi), and Sakakibara Ritsu (played by Kankuro Nakamura), along with the entire military and civilian populace of the castle, the weak Shinobi castle faces an overwhelmingly powerful Toyotomi army in a desperate showdown... This film is adapted from a novel of the same name written by the screenwriter Ryu Wada, based on true historical events, and is the longest-delayed Japanese film due to the 3.11 disaster.
