Charlie (Nicolas Cage) is a kind, gentle, child-loving police officer with a vain and selfish wife. They constantly argue like all mismatched couples, but Charlie always endures. One day, Charlie's wife claims she dreamed about her father, believing it has special meaning, and insists that Charlie buy a lottery ticket. Kind-hearted Charlie, unable to give Eva a tip during breakfast because he has no money, promises that if they win the lottery, they will split it in half; if they don’t win, he will make sure to pay her the next day. Eva, not taking it seriously, is unprepared for a miracle when Charlie's ticket wins a massive four million dollar jackpot! True to his word, Charlie shares half of the winnings with Eva, allowing her to escape her life of bankruptcy and poverty, despite provoking complaints from his wife. Now living the life of a wealthy woman, Charlie's wife enjoys socializing in high society while Charlie grows increasingly close to the equally kind and warm-hearted Eva. The wife takes them to court to reclaim her rightful property, and Charlie and Eva lose the case. On their last night in the city, the two spend time together at their coffee shop, offering a bowl of hot soup to a broke Black man in the rain. This Black journalist, who has struggled in New York City for ten years, writes about that night in the newspaper, and soon all of New York knows the story of these kind-hearted people, sending them their tips. Letters flooded in, and with the kindness of everyone in New York, Charlie and Eva were able to buy back their coffee shop and live happily ever after.
