During the harsh winter, Kaji is dispatched to the North Manchuria Guard. After days of forced training, he is exhausted and has to endure the teasing from the veteran soldiers. However, both in physical strength and shooting skills, he stands out as one of the best, quickly becoming a key soldier in the unit, even taking a protective stance towards the younger soldiers. The friends Kaji protects are also targeted; Shinchiro, who is labeled a red element because his brother is a leftist political prisoner, and Kobara, a second-class soldier who is shaken by a letter from his wife calling him a fool for neglecting his family, is rebuked by the veterans. There is also a 40-year-old veteran conscript. Kaji helps Shinchiro escape to the Soviet Union, while Kobara commits suicide in the bathroom. Kaji's wife travels a great distance to visit him at the unit. They receive special permission to spend a night in the tool shed. Later, due to the Soviet Union's intervention in the war, Kaji's unit is completely annihilated by Soviet tank forces. Only a few, including Kaji, survive.
