Seymour Parrish (Robin Williams) is an ordinary employee at a large photo lab in his forties, leading a solitary single life. However, he has always dreamed of a happy and perfect family. At some point, this dream is projected onto the frequent customer, the Eugene family. Mrs. Eugene, Nina (Connie Nielsen), is beautiful and elegant, and the husband, Will (Michael Vartan), is successful in his career. They also have a lovely child—all things that Seymour longs for but cannot attain. Seymour begins to fantasize about being a part of this family, becoming the endearing "Uncle Simon." He secretly makes copies of the photos they bring in for processing and keeps them for himself. When his actions are discovered, he is fired, but this only drives him to become more fixated and voyeuristic about the family. Upon discovering that the husband is having an affair, Seymour becomes furious and starts planning a punishment, as he believes that his vision of perfection must not be disrupted by anyone…
