In Northern Manchuria, Kaji and his defeated soldiers continuously flee south. Along the way, they encounter fleeing men, women, and children. Although they help them, these individuals die one after another from hunger and exhaustion. After enduring many hardships, Kaji arrives at a pioneer village still inhabited by Japanese elderly and women. He intends to fight against the Soviet army here, but when a Japanese woman shouts, "Don't fight here!" they begin their life as prisoners of war. Kaji harbors deep hatred for the despicable man Kirihara in the camp. Later, he is falsely accused and punished with hard labor. After suffering through hard labor in the forest, he returns to the camp. When he learns that the weak soldier he had protected was killed by Kirihara without consequence, Kaji falls into despair. He kills Kirihara and then escapes from the camp. He wanders in the vast snowy wilderness, reminiscing about his wife’s beauty, gradually freezing to death.
