Starr (Amandla Stenberg) is a 16-year-old Black girl attending a predominantly white private school. Every day, she has to constantly switch her identity between school and home, grappling with the challenges brought by her skin color. One day, at a party hosted by a friend, she reunites with her childhood friend Khalil (Algee Smith). Their warm encounter takes a tragic turn when, on the way home, they are stopped by the police. Starr is shocked when the police shoot Khalil due to a small misunderstanding, making her the only witness. During the subsequent hearings, Khalil is portrayed as a drug-dealing thug, but Starr knows that all of this is a lie.
