Girl Christine (Saoirse Ronan) follows her family to a Catholic high school in California, starting her high school life. Although she is reluctant in many ways, Christine does not have enough strength to resist her family's and life's arrangements. At school, Christine's best friend is Julie (Beanie Feldstein), and the two girls share a close bond. Christine participates in a theater competition and meets a boy named Danny (Lucas Hedges), with whom she quickly develops a mutual attraction.
