Louis (Dennis Price) is the son of a noble family, the D'Ascoyne family, but his mother was disowned due to eloping with an Italian singer, and she faced family rejection until her death. Now grown, Louis vividly remembers the disdain of his aristocratic relatives who refused to allow his mother to be buried in the family plot. After experiencing rejection from his beloved Sibella (Joan Greenwood) because of his poverty, he begins to plot his revenge. He methodically eliminates male relatives who are in line for the title, intending to inherit the dukedom himself. As he becomes more adept at murder, he does not spare even the old, weak, or women, always managing to create coincidences that prevent suspicion from falling on him. However, as his plans unfold, he finds himself entangled in emotional troubles—Sibella remains connected to him despite her marriage, and a beautiful widow from the family, Edith (Valerie Hobson), falls in love with him and wishes to become engaged. Just as Louis is about to triumphantly inherit the title and plan his wedding, it seems that his crimes may be exposed...
