The story takes place in the perpetually cold Rocky Mountains, where Bessie (played by Diane Keaton) and her husband Joseph (played by Kevin Kline) have lost track of how long they have been married, at least long enough for their children to have started their own families. Joseph has always been a self-centered man, immersed in his own world every day, leaving Bessie feeling lonely. One day, Bessie unexpectedly finds a stray dog. Kind-hearted Bessie takes it in and names it "Freeway." The clingy puppy brings new brightness to Bessie's pale life, creating a friendship between the two. However, during an accident, Joseph loses the puppy, and Bessie has never been this angry before. Bessie and her friends decide to organize a search and rescue team to find the dog's whereabouts.
