Dorothea (Annette Bening) is raising her son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann) on her own, enduring hardships and struggles that only she understands. Jamie is deeply in love with a girl named Julie (Elle Fanning), who, despite having had physical relationships with many, seeks a spiritual connection with Jamie. Although they often share the same bed, they struggle to maintain their pure friendship, which causes Jamie much distress. Gradually entering puberty, Jamie begins to show some traits that worry Dorothea. To help her son navigate this special period, Dorothea seeks assistance from their tenant Abbie (Greta Gerwig). Meanwhile, Dorothea continues to hope for a reliable man who could become her husband and Jamie's father.
