J.D. Vance (Gabriel Basso) is a privileged student at Yale Law School, and before pursuing further education, he was an outstanding Marine. Such an impressive resume awaits him a brilliant future. However, just at this critical moment, J.D. receives news from his hometown in Southern Ohio that forces him to return home to deal with complex family matters. It's worth noting that J.D. had worked hard to escape from that chaotic family. Back in his hometown, J.D. encounters his volatile and drug-addicted mother, Bev (Amy Adams), which triggers painful memories of his past. Meanwhile, the image of another strong woman in the Vance family—his grandmother (Glenn Close)—comes alive.
