It was a turbulent era, marked by war, famine, disease, and natural disasters; the shadow of death loomed over the world, yet it couldn’t obscure the dreams and hopes that flickered in the heart. An ordinary Japanese boy, Jiro Horikoshi (voiced by Hideaki Anno), is fascinated by airplanes soaring through the skies. In his dreams, he becomes friends with Italian aircraft designer Giovanni Battista Caproni (voiced by Mansai Nomura) and enjoys the joy of flight. The terrifying Great Kanto Earthquake leads Jiro to encounter a lifelong attachment—Nahoko Satomi (voiced by Maki Nishiyama); their brief meeting slips away amidst the chaos. Guided by fate, Jiro, often referred to as a genius, fulfills his wish to become an aircraft designer. Together with his seniors and peers, he pours his heart and soul into improving aircraft performance. The advanced designs from Europe make them disheartened, while simultaneously, they create machines that merge dreams with the deadly attributes of warfare. He pursues his dreams and reunites with Nahoko. In the tumultuous Showa era, his steps never cease amidst the swirling wind and snow... This film is based on the life story of Zero Fighter designer Jiro Horikoshi and the novel of the same name by writer Tatsuo Hori.
