The story takes place in 1874, where von (played by Burghart Klaußner) is the principal of a school. Ambitious and determined to implement sweeping reforms, he decides to introduce English lessons, making this school the first in Germany to offer English courses. Thus, English teacher Koch (played by Daniel Brühl) arrives to teach at the school. From the very beginning, Koch's teaching plan faces numerous obstacles, as both students and parents are filled with prejudice against the British. Ultimately, Koch decides to use football as a way to help the students better understand England. Although his plan yields significant results, it also angers some stakeholders. Certain influential figures begin to push for Koch's departure from the school.
