During the Tokugawa shogunate, in a certain domain of Shinshu. The domain lord's wife goes mad and dies, entrusting her swaddled infant son and beloved dog to her confidante, the maid Akina (played by Yukiko Komura), on her deathbed. Three years later, Akina, who has never been with a man, gives birth to a baby boy. The domain is rife with speculation, with rumors circulating that the baby was born of Akina and the dog, leading to the baby being named Banpei. Soon after, Banpei is sent to be raised by a common farming family. Twenty-three years later, Banpei (played by Raizo Ichikawa) has grown into a handsome young man. Before his adoptive father's death, he emphasizes the importance of acquiring extraordinary skills to survive in this challenging world. Following this, Banpei is summoned to the city to work as a gardener, where his unmatched foot speed gains widespread attention, and through his exceptional intelligence, he learns the swordsmanship of the grandmaster Miichiro Daigo (played by Asao Uchida). Meanwhile, turmoil arises in the domain over the succession issue, forcing the kind-hearted Banpei to transform into a cold-blooded assassin...
