The film is adapted from the original work by Hwang Hee-young and is the last work of Lee Wan-hee before his death. The renowned director Ha Kil-jong once remarked, “This film is an immortal masterpiece that encapsulates the essence of Korean cinematic thought. It is on the verge of ushering in a reform in domestic filmmaking, but unfortunately, it still falls short. However, I appreciate its emanating aura of mystery.” This statement reflects the significant position of this film in the history of Korean cinema. It is a precious early road movie in Korea, and the warm perspective inserted into the process of modernization's indifference is particularly rare. The characters and hues harmonized against the broad expanse of snowy plains prevent "The Celestial Road to Seonpo" from becoming an ordinary mediocre work, and it also makes up for the poor quality and rough production trends of the time in Korean filmmaking. The intense contrast brought about by experimentation and new styles, along with the clash between tradition and modernity, cannot be denied, and Lee Wan-hee’s profound contemplation of life brought an unusual emotional impact to the audience. Lee Wan-hee fell ill in the studio during the post-production editing of this film and later died after being taken to the hospital. Therefore, the crew revealed: “He probably realized that this could be his last film, so despite not looking well, he was in high spirits every day during filming, practically doing everything himself,” showing the dedication poured into the film.
